Obituary of George Huntington Strong, Jr.

Port Allegany-George H. Strong, 86, of Port Allegany, PA, passed away on Sunday, September 7th, 2014, in the Bradford Regional Medical Center, Bradford He was born June 23, 1928 in Akron, OH, a son of George and Ethel Morgan Strong. On October 1, 1950, in Richmond, IN, he married Gloria A. Stover, who survives. George graduated from Kenmore High School in 1946. He was drafted and pitched for minor league teams, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox until the summer of 1950. He served in the U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division as a point scout and was wounded in Korea and received the Purple Heart. He was employed by Fairlawn Supply as a concrete salesman and then superintendent of J. P. Loomis Company. He served as a commander of VFW Post 1089. He was active as a baseball manager for both VFW and American Legion teams. In 1980, he relocated to Port Allegany and sold tires for Tri County Tire, retiring in 2001. George was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany. In addition to his wife, Gloria, of 63 years, he leaves two daughters, Teresa (Ted) Good, Vicki (Rick) Fleming, 3 sons George (Lesa) Strong, Robert (Sandra) Strong and a son at home, Hugh D. Strong. He had 7 grandchildren, Catherine Brulport, Sarah Strong, Aaron Strong, Tiffany Klein, Bryan Strong, Jeremy Fleming, Nick Fleming, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Eddith Fisher and Christine Schertz. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 105 Main St., Port Allegany, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11 A.M., in the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, with the Rev. Garen Smith, pastor, officiating. He will be buried with full Military Honors in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH., on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 10:30 AM Memorials, if desired, may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, 12 Church Street, Port Allegany, PA 16743.
