Obituary of Alva Burdick

Smethport - Alva Burdick, 92, of Smethport, died Friday (November 28, 2014) in the Lakeview Senior Care & Living Ctr., Smethport. She was born Aug 6, 1922 in Wellsville, NY, a daughter of Preston L. and Alice E. Richards Bernard. On July 28, 1946, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport, she married William O. Burdick, who died June 3, 2010. Mrs. Burdick was a 1939 graduate of Smethport High School and Westbrook Academy of Olean, NY. Mrs. Burdick was employed at North Penn Gas Co. of Port Allegany. During World War II, she was employed as secretary for R.W. Herzog, owner of Smethport Specialty Co. During the 1960’s, she was employed at the McKean County Court House, then the Smethport Motel, where she helped her Mother for eight years. In 1975, she and her husband owned and operated the Motel until 1993, when they both retired. Mrs. Burdick was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Smethport and the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 Auxiliary of Smethport. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, watching T.V., and being with her family. She is survived by two daughters: Nancy (Walt) Mackey of Bradford and Rebecca (Robert) Funk of Smethport one son: Robert (Donna) Burdick of Smethport six grandchildren: Sr. Mst. Sgt. David (Kristin) Mackey of Beaver Creek, OH; Joseph Mackey of Bradford; Jennifer Funk of Erie, PA; James (Heather) Funk of Smethport; Jill (Branden) Labecki of Lower Burrell, PA; and Pamela (Kurt) Ferman of Smethport six great-grandchildren one sister: Ruth Okerlund of Henderson, NV, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jack and Joe Bernard. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 1, from 1-2 pm at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, where funeral and committal services will be held at 2 pm with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor of the Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Smethport, or the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 Auxiliary of Smethport.
