Obituary of Leonard D. "Hoby" Hosmer

Smethport - Leonard D. “Hoby” Hosmer, 80, of Smethport, passed away Tuesday (January 27, 2015) at his residence in Smethport. He was born July 28, 1934 in Olean, NY, a son of Leonard and Elizabeth Monroe Hosmer. On October 24, 1981, in Eldred, PA, he married Joan Carol Huey, who died December 6, 2010. “Hoby” was a graduate of Otto Eldred High School and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hosmer was employed first for Pierce Glass, then Ball-Incon in Port Allegany for many years before retiring and going to work for Duffy, Inc. of Smethport. He was a loader operator there until his health declined. He was a member of VFW Post #2497 of Smethport. “Hoby” enjoyed going to Florida to his vacation home, loved to gamble at the casinos and off track betting, and loved and followed all sports. He also was an avid fisherman throughout his life. He is survived by: five daughters: Joyce (Jim) Dodge, Kelly (Bob) Dixon, and Wanda Duffy, all of Smethport, Colleen Duffy of Bradford, and Deborah (Chris) Pagano of Manheim, PA five sons: Larry Hosmer of Johnstown, PA, David (Sharon) Hosmer of Brocton, NY, Rick Hosmer of Portville, NY, Leroy (Carol) Duffy and James "Chum" (Ronda) Duffy, both of Smethport 20 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren. three sisters: Shirley Vanapps of Punta Gorda, FL, Pat Barrett of Rixford, and Betty Evingham of Shinglehouse one brother: Max Hosmer of Chico, CA, , and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Hosmer, one son, Michael Duffy on June 14, 2012, and one sister, Nancy Milliron. There will be no visitation. A Memorial service will be held Friday, January 30 at 11:00 am from the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport, with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor of the Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport.
