Obituary of Edward William Shelander

Smethport - Edward William Shelander, 87, of Smethport, died Tuesday (January 27, 2015) in the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC, while vacationing at his daughter’s home in Fayetteville, NC. He was born July 16, 1927 in Kane, a son of John August and Sophia Steinhauer Shelander. On November 21, 1953, in Bradford, PA, he married Doris M. Wells, who died March 31, 2014. Mr. Shelander was a 1947 graduate of Hazelhurst High School and was employed as an operator for the Quaker State Oil Refinery in Farmers Valley, PA for 42 years, retiring in 1990. Mr. Shelander was a member of the United Methodist Church of Smethport, where he was an Usher and was on the Pastor Parish Committee, among other positions over the years. He was also a member of the McKean Lodge #388 F&AM of Smethport, where he was a Past Worshipful Master, a 32nd Degree member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the Coudersport Consistory, Shriner’s International, Lodge #389 L.O.O.F., a member of the Smethport Volunteer Fire Dept., and the Smethport Fire Police, where he was a Lieutenant. He is survived by: three daughters: Barbara Ann (Lonnie) Hovis of Smethport, Amie Jo (Mark) Lingenfelter of Emporium, and Martha Louise (Floyd) Russel of Fayetteville, NC five granddaughters, two grandsons, 2 great-grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Frank and John D. Shelander. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 5-8 p.m., at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport, PA. Funeral and committal services will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m., in the United Methodist Church of Smethport, with the Rev. Rob Hernan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette. A Masonic service will be conducted by the McKean Lodge #388 F&AM of Smethport at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening in the funeral home.
