Obituary of Paul D. Comes

Smethport - Paul D. Comes, 87, of Irish Hollow Road, passed away Wednesday (September 30, 2015) in the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport. He was born January 4, 1928 in Smethport, a son of Harry D. and Hilda V. Berg Comes. On May 24, 1947, in St. Elizabeth Church, Smethport, he married Helen Nick. She preceded him in death on December 19, 1988. On November 27, 1982, in Smethport, he married Beverly Larson, who died December 26, 2012. Paul was a proud graduate of Smethport High School's class of 1946, and throughout his lifetime, loved to attend Smethport Hubber sporting events. Mr. Comes was employed by E.D. Comes Dairy from an early age until he was 23. Then starting in the summer of 1951, Paul was employed for a little over 40 years, until January of 1991, for Quaker State Oil Refinery of Farmers Valley in the barrel house, crude unit and then the gas station and loading dock. Beginning as a hobby in 1952, Mr. Comes grew a side career as a Christmas tree farmer on his property in Irish Hollow. Paul embarked upon another part-time job, in December of 1961 as the caretaker of the St. Elizabeth's Cemetery in Smethport. In 1989, Paul became President of St. Elizabeth's Cemetery Association, a position that he held until only recently stepping down. Paul was an instrumental member in making the Keating Sportsman's Club what it is today assisting in the development of the building and grounds, where construction began in the timeframe of 1970-1972. Following its construction, Paul was actively involved in its growth and usage, serving as the Club President from 1972 – 1989. As an avid Sportsman, he was also a proud member of the National Wild Turkey Federation Mr. Comes joined St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church on Christmas day of 1945 when he was a senior in high school. An active member of the church, Paul was a lector and usher for many years and served as the Secretary of the Holy Name Society, an organization in which he was a member for over 30 years. Upon his retirement from Quaker State, Mr. Comes spent a great deal of time volunteering for over 15 years as a member of the Sena Kean Nursing Home Auxiliary. Additionally he delivered Meals-on-Wheels in the Smethport area from 2000-2010. Mr. Comes is survived by five children: David (Sharon) Comes of Dalmatian, PA, Victoria (Richard) Bickford of Smethport, Judith (David) Lowe of Eldred, Virginia (Stacey) Lunn of Smethport, and Paul Comes of New Hope, VA Nine grandchildren: Tammy (Fred) Zimmerman, Rebecca (Warren) Peters, Patrick Bickford, Marjorie (John) O'Connor, Evelyn (Christopher) Moyer, David (Shayna) Lowe, John (Laurie) Lunn, Nicole (Jeffery) Defilippi, and Ryan (Sheri) Comes 22 Great Grandchildren one sister: Esther Herriman of Smethport two brothers: Donald and Harry Comes, Jr., both of Smethport, and several nieces and nephews In addition to his parents and wives, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers: Gordon and William Comes, and two sisters: Harriett Burgart and Virginia Sayers. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 A.M. to 12 noon at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, Oct. 16 at 10:00 A.M. in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Vincent Cieslewicz, Pastor as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport. The family gratefully declines flowers. Memorials, if desired, may be made in Paul's name to St. Elizabeth's Church Building Fund, the Sena Kean Manor Auxiliary, or a charity of the donor's choice.
